“I’ve been thinking a lot about kindness lately. Living, whether or not we do it well and with grace, is no easy feat: there is loneliness, suffering, and isolation. This is the human experience John Steinbeck’s Grapes of Wrath documents excruciatingly well. Good people, wholesome people, people hanging on with their fingernails fall on hard times, and in their suffering and sojourn are often met with more suffering – be it at the hands of mother nature, unkind circumstances, or another human being. There are moments, though, of kindness – The shopkeeper, who gives the children candy, pretending it costs less than it actually does Because the father misreads the sign And the children are starving. There are moments like these daily When, caught up in my own self interest, I fail to maintain the perspective of the burden we all carry And perhaps, the best thing, the most important, the wholesome and gracious act, is not to ruminate on my load, but instead to give as best I can kindness.”
